And rightly so.<\/p>\n<p>While matters of sexual assault are not exactly front and center, they are receiving some timely attention through the <a href=\"http:\/\/nomore.org\/\">\u201cNo More\u201d <\/a>campaign, which has been airing since September, and articles like this, which revisit \u2018no means no\u2019 and more:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/09\/education\/edlife\/stepping-up-to-stop-sexual-assault.html?hpw&amp;rref=education\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/09\/education\/edlife\/stepping-up-to-stop-sexual-assault.html?hpw&amp;rref=education<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two thoughts occur to me:<\/p>\n<p>1). The staggering numbers when it comes to male involvement. \u00a0Only three percent are responsible for most assaults, leaving 97 percent to simply stop being bystanders.<\/p>\n<p>2).\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to stop using the word \u2018simply\u2019 when talking about this.\u00a0 Nothing is simple.\u00a0 I recall the difficulty I had writing about this topic in my book.\u00a0 I was drawn to the fatherly (male?) tack of telling young women to be careful, protect themselves, and take preventative measures (like monitoring alcohol intake).\u00a0 But a former student suggested I was venturing into \u2018blame the victim\u2019 territory, and I had to rethink it all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sex.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-500\" src=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sex-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"sex\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sex-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sex-1024x796.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the end (which isn\u2019t really the end in this ongoing effort), one must not fall in the middle, riding the fence, when faced with an issue like this.\u00a0 So, I subscribe to a \u2018both-and\u2019 stance, where I advise would-be victims (females and males alike) to take precautions and preventative measures, and I encourage males to get educated about how to become part of the solution.\u00a0 In the book, I felt inadequate on both counts, so I continue to defer to those who are off and running with some really good ideas.\u00a0 The above article and the <a href=\"http:\/\/nomore.org\/\">\u2018No More\u2019 campaign<\/a> do a pretty good job of framing the issue and calling young men (and campus administrators) to action.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few articles I\u2019ve read along the way that tried to tackle this troubling topic.\u00a0 At the time I wrote my book, there was a thought-provoking piece by Kate Taylor in which the author explored campus sexual relationships through in-depth interviews at Penn University.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <i>\u201cSex on Campus:\u00a0 She Can Play That Game, Too.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/14\/fashion\/sex-on-campus-she-can-play-that-game-too.html\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/14\/fashion\/sex-on-campus-she-can-play-that-game-too.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The response to her article was quick and loud, as well\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/publiceditor.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/16\/sex-on-campus-writer-responds-to-questions-and-complaints\/?src=recg\">http:\/\/publiceditor.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/16\/sex-on-campus-writer-responds-to-questions-and-complaints\/?src=recg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the conversation continues with <i>\u201cLove in the Time of Hookups\u201d<\/i> here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/douthat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/18\/love-in-the-time-of-hookups\/?src=recg\">http:\/\/douthat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/18\/love-in-the-time-of-hookups\/?src=recg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The sexual assault conversations were just as active\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/double_x\/doublex\/2013\/10\/sexual_assault_and_drinking_teach_women_the_connection.html\">http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/double_x\/doublex\/2013\/10\/sexual_assault_and_drinking_teach_women_the_connection.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/10\/16\/it_s_the_rapists_not_the_drinking_to_prevent_sexual_assault_on_college_campuses.html\">http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/10\/16\/it_s_the_rapists_not_the_drinking_to_prevent_sexual_assault_on_college_campuses.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/10\/18\/rape_culture_and_binge_drinking_emily_yoffe_responds_to_her_critics.html\">http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/10\/18\/rape_culture_and_binge_drinking_emily_yoffe_responds_to_her_critics.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As we continue to look for solutions, the most immediate action would be to keep this issue front and center with an ongoing dialogue.\u00a0 Hope this contributes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This two-letter word keeps creeping up lately\u2026.
