So let\u2019s simply settle on a fast and loose translation:&nbsp; \u2018Seize the college experience (in its entirety).\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Carpe College! is an idea.&nbsp; An approach.&nbsp; An M.O.&nbsp; A habit.&nbsp; A way of embracing everything college life throws your way \u2013 academics and the rest \u2013 and doing so with vigor.&nbsp; Or, as President Kennedy would have said, \u201cwith VIGAH!\u201d&nbsp; It\u2019s also an exploration, a continual experiment, a series of tests and trials and the dipping of many toes into many different waters in an attempt to uncover who you are and how you fit\u2026 with others\u2026 with the world at large\u2026 with your own notion of who you\u2019d like to become.<\/p>\n<p>This is Carpe College!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s being liberated and taking risks.&nbsp; It\u2019s being smart about managing those risks, not cowering before them, but recognizing that all the best learning comes from risk-taking and results.&nbsp; Risk-taking and results.&nbsp; Rinse.&nbsp; Repeat.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about reinventing yourself and finding yourself, knowing that you\u2019re still emerging and growing all along.<\/p>\n<p>It encompasses both the LEARNING and the LIVING parts of college, never easy to separate, but we\u2019ll do so for our purposes.&nbsp; We\u2019ll explore strategies and stories that encourage you to actively and intentionally seek success in all facets of the experience.&nbsp; We\u2019ll toss out some ideas that you can try in your first semester, or blow off until second semester, or revisit after your first year (if you come crawling back with your tail between your legs because you didn\u2019t listen the first time).&nbsp; And we\u2019ll predicate all of it around our mantra:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em><strong>\u2018Know Thyself.&nbsp; Have a Plan.&nbsp; Assume No One Else Cares.\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s your academic life or your life outside the classroom, this mantra will serve as a friendly reminder and useful guide.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the ultimate goal of Carpe College! is all about.&nbsp; Beginning the next phase of your life \u2013 the college phase \u2013 seizing every moment and every opportunity in order to find, and ultimately follow, your bliss.<\/p>\n<h4>Why do we need Carpe College?<\/h4>\n<p>There are millions of miserable, middle-aged people in the world, and I\u2019m assuming you don\u2019t want to end up like them.&nbsp; That\u2019s what this book is about:&nbsp; developing habits and a plan to become\u2026. well\u2026. not miserable.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty lofty, eh?!<\/p>\n<p>For many, college is the first real and significant step toward finding one\u2019s place in the universe, to \u2018following one\u2019s bliss.\u2019&nbsp; So, if you prefer bliss to misery, you\u2019ll need to embrace the college experience in all its glory.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need to have a sense of yourself, your goals, your strengths and weaknesses.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need to have an active approach to tackling schoolwork, meeting new friends, and expanding your horizons.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need to start dreaming your own dreams, rather than those of your parents.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need to develop keen internal radar that helps you distinguish between opportunities and distractions.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need balance.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need to learn to trust yourself and to forgive yourself and to get back on your horse and take some more risk.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need to reflect seriously and often on the question:&nbsp; \u201cWho am I, where am I going, why and how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">(Oh yeah, and parents will want you to find a job, so we\u2019ll cover that, too.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>How to use Carpe College!<\/h4>\n<p>This book is about looking forward.<\/p>\n<p>By the time you\u2019re reading this book, I\u2019m guessing you already know which college you\u2019ll be attending.&nbsp; Leading up to that point, I\u2019m guessing you already received plenty of advice about applying to college and choosing a college and getting into a college.&nbsp; I\u2019m guessing you read some books, checked out some websites, and listened to a whole lot of advice from teachers, guidance counselors, parents and other kids.&nbsp; And I\u2019m guessing that was a kind of \u2018fun\u2019 you\u2019d never experienced before in your life.&nbsp; So, now that it\u2019s over, it\u2019s time to take a deep breath, relax and enjoy, bask in the glory of all your hard work paying off, and begin to look forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>A Caveat Before You Carpe\u2026..&nbsp; (What\u2019s with the weird Latin talk!)<\/h4>\n<p>Essentially, this means that there\u2019s a warning before we begin, and that warning is\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em><strong>Everyone who ever went to college will have an opinion about it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_715\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-715\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-715\" src=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Riding shotgun with Dr. Seuss!\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Riding shotgun with Dr. Seuss!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m just one guy with some thoughts, some ideas, some perspective to share.&nbsp; And, because I\u2019m me, I think you should listen to me.&nbsp; But because I\u2019m just one guy, you should listen to everyone else, too.&nbsp; The best strategy for you as a young person heading off to college is to reach out to as many people and resources as possible &#8212; parents, aunts, uncles, older sibs, the neighbor a few doors down who\u2019s a couple of years ahead of you &#8212; and listen to \u2018em all.&nbsp;&nbsp; Acknowledge that they ALL have value.&nbsp; Note the similarities and differences in what you\u2019re hearing, tuck it all away into your memory bank, and take it with you to school.&nbsp; You\u2019ll try some stuff, learn from it, listen some more, and try again.&nbsp;&nbsp; You\u2019ll try to make sense of it from there, and you\u2019ll be making up your own mind through it all.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the adult world of trying to figure it out as you go.<\/p>\n<p>Treat everything you read in Carpe College! as fodder for examination and discussion.&nbsp; It\u2019s food for thought, grist for the mill, fat to chew, shit to shoot, hash to sling\u2026.&nbsp; It\u2019s all fair game for debate and dissection.&nbsp; Your parents may not agree with some of my perspectives.&nbsp; They might think I\u2019m an idiot.&nbsp; Perfect.&nbsp; More stuff for you guys to talk about.&nbsp; It\u2019s all fine.&nbsp; It\u2019s all good.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s important is that it\u2019s yours, and that you\u2019re the one doing the Carpe-ing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Let us begin.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>College just got easier!
