{"id":59,"date":"2013-06-04T16:30:58","date_gmt":"2013-06-04T20:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/?page_id=59"},"modified":"2014-01-05T11:06:23","modified_gmt":"2014-01-05T16:06:23","slug":"its-all-education","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/?page_id=59","title":{"rendered":"from the beginning of  \u2018Living\u2019\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><strong><i>\u201cI never let schooling get in the way of my education.\u201d\u00a0 <\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><i>&#8211; Mark Twain<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/illust-frisbee-guy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-257\" alt=\"illust-frisbee-guy\" src=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/illust-frisbee-guy.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/illust-frisbee-guy.png 300w, https:\/\/carpecollege.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/illust-frisbee-guy-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/i><\/b>There\u2019s way more to college than book learnin\u2019.\u00a0 There are sporting events, concerts, intramural activities, art shows, theater, political demonstrations, philanthropic endeavors, guest speakers, and every possible club activity under the sun, from <em>a cappella<\/em> singing to rock climbing to Quidditch (Yes, there are even intercollegiate Quidditch competitions nowadays).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all education.\u00a0 It\u2019s a rich panoply of experiences that you may <em>never<\/em> again have within your daily grasp. When you\u2019re part of a college community, you\u2019re a built-in audience for famous and almost famous people who want to share stuff with you. As a result, \u2018people will come,\u2019 to quote that wonderful <i>Field of Dreams<\/i> line (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NZ1dZhh0_RQ\" target=\"_blank\">look it up!<\/a>)\u00a0 And, although there are myriad enrichment opportunities all around you on a college campus, you need to be ACTIVE and INTENTIONAL about getting the most out of them because, unlike high school, no one will force you to do anything.\u00a0 You can sit passively and watch the world go by rather than being a part of it.<\/p>\n<p>Do yourself a favor:\u00a0 choose to be a part of it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><strong><i>\u201cI wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 <\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><i> -Henry David Thoreau<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Okay.\u00a0 So, we already saw this quote when we were introducing the <i>Carpe College!<\/i> concept.\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 But it\u2019s a great outlook, so we\u2019re repeating it. \u00a0Yes, Thoreau was talking about living in the woods, and we\u2019re talking about moving beyond the books on a college campus, but the idea is the same.\u00a0 If you wish to truly experience the life you\u2019re embarking upon, you need to do it deeply.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 First of all, because you want to have a rich life.\u00a0 It will be more interesting and more exciting, and you\u2019ll end up with better stories to tell.\u00a0 Also, the more exploring and experimenting you do, the better chance you have of finding your place in the universe.\u00a0 As mentioned earlier, Joseph Campbell called it \u201cFollow Your Bliss.&#8221; \u00a0Others have said things like, \u201cDo what you love, and the money will follow.\u201d\u00a0 The ideas are the same.\u00a0 You want to find something to love <em>and<\/em> find a way to spend your life doing that.\u00a0 At eighteen, however, how do you know what you love unless you try lots of stuff?\u00a0 Whatever it turns out to be, it\u2019s probably not going to stroll up and tap you on the shoulder.\u00a0 It will require effort and experimentation and experience.\u00a0 Your college campus, with all its great offerings, is the perfect setting for this kind of experimentation and for this kind of experience.\u00a0 It can become your very own laboratory for finding your passion, for finding yourself.\u00a0 It just requires your effort.\u00a0 So, make the most of it.<\/p>\n<p><em>(If you\u2019re one of those fortunate few who\u2019s already found what you love, or one who has had a very active and cosmopolitan high school experience, please be open to the fact that college will offer literally thousands of new academic subjects and extracurricular experiences that will be new to you.\u00a0 Even if you are happy with your set path, don\u2019t miss out on the opportunity to soak in all that new bliss.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Maybe finding your bliss or your place in the universe seems a bit too lofty at this stage.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine.\u00a0 Let\u2019s get crass (or practical) and set our sights on finding a job then.\u00a0 It turns out that everything suggested above \u2013 all that non-academic stuff \u2013 is also wonderful preparation for the practicalities of seeking employment. \u00a0\u00a0Of course, every time you plan your week, organize your life, study for a test, conduct research, take notes, work on a team, give a presentation, or think analytically, you are developing and honing important skills that will be marketable in the workforce.\u00a0 They are built into your academic pursuits.\u00a0 HOWEVER, there\u2019s important stuff built into your non-academic life, as well, and we\u2019ll explore that in the coming pages.<\/p>\n<p>But, before we venture into this new terrain, let\u2019s remind ourselves once again of our mantra:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><em><strong>\u201cKnow thyself.\u00a0 Have a Plan.\u00a0 Assume No One Else Cares.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Weather it\u2019s finding cool campus events, finding yourself socially, or finding a career path that seems right to you, this mantra can be your guide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI never let schooling get in the way of my education.\u201d\u00a0 &#8211;
